Bertrand Tavernier’s personal journey through French cinema, from films he enjoyed as a boy to his own early career, told through portraits of key creative figures such as Renoir, Becker, Vigo, Truffaut, and many more. Inspired by Martin Scorsese’s Personal Journey through American Movies, Tavernier explores Gallic cinema from the 1930’s through the early 1970’s in this ambitious and fascinating documentary. As Tavernier would say, “Memory warms us: this film is a bit of coal for winter nights.”
